Sowing Instructions

 

Sow thinly on the surface or cover very lightly in trays of moist fine seed compost March to May for spring planting. Provide a cool period or cold stratify for 1 to 2 weeks to improve germination where possible. Keep at cool to moderate temperatures around 10 to 18°C and maintain even moisture.

 

Prick out into modules when seedlings have true leaves and harden off before planting out after the last frost. For autumn sowing sow August to September in a sheltered seedbed to establish before winter. Space plants 20 to 30 cm apart.

 

Grow in full sun or light shade in fertile well drained soil enriched with organic matter. Stake or use short supports where necessary to keep spikes upright. Deadhead to prolong flowering and cut stems for vases when blooms are fresh. Mulch to conserve moisture during establishment and protect young plants from slugs and snails. Allow some seed to set if naturalising is desired.
