Radish Amethyst Seed

A fast growing globe radish with striking purple skin and crisp white flesh offering a spicy fresh flavour ideal for salads sandwiches and quick succession crops.

Sow: February to September for a continuous harvest; sow little and often.

Germination: 7 to 14 days in warm moist conditions.

Soil & position: Prefers reasonably fertile soil; tolerates loam or clay that is alkaline or neutral.

Harvest: April to October; pull while roots are small and tender to avoid woody texture.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow thinly in drills or broadcast into prepared soil and cover lightly; keep the seedbed evenly moist for reliable rapid germination. Thin seedlings to allow 2 to 5 cm spacing for standard globe sizes and sow successive patches every 1 to 2 weeks for continuous cropping.

 

Growing tips and companions

 

Rake a balanced fertiliser into the bed before sowing and avoid brassicas nearby. Good companion crops include beetroot beans carrots cucumber lettuce and nasturtiums. Radish are almost trouble free but protect young seedlings from slugs and avoid letting roots become overlarge or woody by harvesting promptly.
