Merveille d’Hiver Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is a classic French butterhead variety, prized for its tender, flavourful leaves and exceptional cold tolerance. Sowing Instructions

 

Indoors: For early crops, start seeds indoors from August to February. Use seed trays or pots filled with fine, well-draining compost, sowing seeds thinly on the surface and covering lightly with compost. Keep temperatures between 10-18°C and maintain moisture until germination. Transplant seedlings into individual pots and harden off before planting outside.

 

Outdoors: Direct sow from September to March in well-prepared soil. Scatter seeds thinly in drills 1 cm deep, spaced 30 cm apart. Cover lightly with soil, water gently, and thin seedlings as needed to ensure ample space for heads to develop. Provide cloche protection in severe frosts for an extended harvest.
