Basil Herb Italiano Classico ORGANIC Herb Seeds

A classic Italian basil with large, spoon-shaped bright green leaves and a rich, aromatic flavour. This mid-early variety is vigorous, tender, and highly prized for its use in pesto, tomato salads, pasta sauces, and Mediterranean dishes.

Sow February to June or year-round indoors.

Germination 7 to 10 days at 18–22°C.

Soil and Position Loam or sandy soil; prefers acidic to neutral pH. Full sun and sheltered position.

Height Approx 30 to 45 cm; compact, branching habit.

Harvesting June to October; pick leaves regularly to encourage fresh growth.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow thinly from February onto moist, well-drained compost. Cover lightly and place on a warm, sunny windowsill or in a propagator. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into pots or outdoor beds after frost. Space 20–25 cm apart.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in fertile, free-draining soil. Water regularly and feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Harvest leaves as needed, avoiding removal of more than one-third of the plant at a time. Pinch out flower buds to extend leaf production.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Perfect for herb gardens, containers, windowsills, and companion planting. The aromatic leaves are ideal for pesto, pasta, pizza, soups, and salads. Pairs well with tomatoes, peppers, and oregano. Avoid planting near sage.
