Chives Prager ORGANIC Herb Seed - Irish Plants Direct

 

A hardy and flavourful herb producing dense clumps of slender green leaves with a mild onion taste.

 

Allium Prager this organically produced perennial is valued for its vigorous growth and reliable cropping.

Unlike finer chive strains Prager forms thicker leaves and stronger plants making it one of the most popular varieties for both culinary and ornamental use.

 

Its robust habit and excellent flavour make it a favourite for home gardens and allotments.

Sow March to May directly outdoors or in trays. Germination 14 to 21 days at 15–20°C. Soil and Position Moist fertile well drained soil; prefers full sun or partial shade. Height 30–40 cm with upright leaves and purple flower heads. Harvesting May to October; cut leaves regularly to encourage fresh growth.

 

Sowing instructions

Prepare a fine seed bed in full sun or partial shade. Sow seeds thinly in drills 1 cm deep and 30 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 10 cm spacing once established. Water well after sowing and keep soil evenly moist during dry spells. Chives can also be grown in pots for convenient harvesting.

 

Grow and maintenance

Grow in moist fertile soil with regular watering to encourage lush foliage. Cut leaves frequently to maintain tender growth and prevent flowering. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour. Chives Prager is hardy and low maintenance making it ideal for beginner gardeners.
