An evergreen aromatic herb with soft grey green leaves and spikes of purple blue flowers in summer.

 

Hardy and long lived, ideal for herb gardens borders and containers with fresh or dried leaves used in cooking and herbal teas.

Sow February to May

Germination 14 to 21 days in warm conditions.

Soil and Position Well drained loam chalk or sandy soil in full sun.

Harvest May to November by picking young shoots or cutting as required.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Sow thinly between February and May in seed trays or modules about 0.5 to 1.5 cm deep and keep compost warm and evenly moist for best results. Separate and pot on seedlings when they have true leaves and harden off before planting out after the last frost.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in well drained soil or containers with a free draining compost. Feed lightly into established plants and avoid waterlogging. Prune back after flowering to maintain a compact shape and remove any woody stems. Rosemary and thyme make good companions in a sunny herb bed.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Leaves are excellent fresh or dried for seasoning poultry stuffing soups and roasted vegetables. Attractive to pollinators when in flower and useful as an ornamental focal point in herb gardens.
