Welsh Onion Grove Herb Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

Allium fistulosum, commonly known as Welsh Onion, is a hardy perennial grown for its mild, onion-flavoured stems and leaves.

Unlike bulb forming onions, Welsh Onion produces clusters of hollow stems that can be harvested repeatedly.

The flavour is fresh and versatile, ideal for salads, stir-fries, soups, and garnishes. Plants are long lived, reliable, and highly productive, making them a staple in herb and vegetable gardens.

Perfect for beds, borders, and kitchen gardens. The plants are clump forming and free growing, with attractive green foliage that can be cut and used throughout the season.

Excellent for continuous harvests and for gardeners seeking a low maintenance, perennial onion.

Seed Qty Approx 2 grams

Germination 14 to 21 days in warm, steady conditions.
Soil and Position Fertile, well-drained soil; loam or sandy soils enriched with organic matter. Plant in full sun or partial shade.

Sowing instructions
Sow thinly in drills 1 cm deep, spacing rows 25 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 10 cm apart once established. Keep soil moist to encourage tender growth. Welsh Onion can also be sown indoors in pots or trays and transplanted outdoors after the last frost. Plants will establish quickly and provide harvests from their first season.

Grow and maintenance
Plant in full sun or partial shade in fertile, free draining soil. Water regularly during dry spells to maintain tenderness. Cut stems regularly to encourage new growth. Clumps will expand over time and can be divided every few years to maintain vigour. Hardy and reliable, Welsh Onion requires little maintenance once established.

Uses and benefits
Perfect for salads, soups, stir-fries, and garnishes. Welsh Onion provides a continuous supply of fresh onion flavour without the need for bulbs. A hardy perennial that supports sustainable gardening and adds both culinary and ornamental value to the garden.
