Wild Garlic Herb Seeds. - Irish Plants Direct

Allium ursinum, commonly known as Wild Garlic, Ramsons, or Bear’s Garlic, is a highly aromatic perennial herb found in damp woodlands and shaded areas.

The Latin name Allium means “garlic,” while ursinum refers to bears, as it is believed that bears consume the plant after hibernation to regain strength. This hardy plant is prized for its edible leaves and white star-like flowers, which provide a burst of springtime beauty while supporting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Wild Garlic is a perfect addition to woodland gardens, shaded borders, and naturalised areas, offering both culinary and ornamental value. The young leaves have a mild garlic flavour and can be used in salads, pestos, and soups, while the flowers make an attractive garnish.

This low-growing plant reaches a height of 50 cm and thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade. It spreads naturally, forming lush green carpets in spring before dying back in summer.

Wild Garlic requires little maintenance once established. Keep soil moist, especially during dry periods, and allow plants to self-seed for natural spread. Leaves are best harvested in early spring before flowering for the best flavour.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors
Sow indoors between February- May in trays or pots of moist compost, covering lightly. Keep at temperatures between 15 - 20°C.

Transplant seedlings into individual pots or trays to grow on when the plants are large enough to handle. Gradually harden off the plants before planting out after all risk of frost has passed.

Wild Garlic is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to grow a delicious and aromatic perennial herb that supports local wildlife. Ideal for woodland gardens or naturalised areas, it adds beauty, biodiversity, and flavour to any outdoor space.
