Poppy Hens And Chickens Seeds - Irish Plants Direct
 
This easy to grow annual is often grown for its unusual seed heads. 
 
The attractive deep red to purple impressive flowers stand on thin wiry stems adding a splash of colour to garden borders during summer. 
 
However it's the seed heads that provide a long-lasting impression use as a dried flower for displays around the home.

Sow February - April or September - November 
Loam, chalk, or sandy soil that's acidic, alkaline, or neutral 
Germination time 14 - 21 days
Height 60cm - 90cm

Planting ideas Beds, borders, low maintenance, wildlife, wildflower, cottage 
Also known as papaver
Cut the attractive stems 
 
 
Sow between February - April on a sunny window sill or in a propagator. 
 
When the seedlings are large enough to handle pot on into modules or trays to grow on. 
Gradually harden off the plants before planting out where they are to flower. 
 
Sow between September - November 5mm deep where they are to grow into finely raked moist soil to flower the following year. 
 
Thin out gradually leaving the plants to 20cm apart.
