Poppy Irish Velvet Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A showy hardy annual producing large, velvety, peony like blooms in rich maroon to near black shades contrasted with creamy highlights, held on tall, graceful stems for striking summer displays in beds, borders, and meadow style plantings.

Seed Qty Approx 750.

Sow March to May or August to October; direct sow where plants are to flower.
Germination 14 to 21 days.
Soil and Position Loam, chalk, or sandy soils; acidic, alkaline, or neutral; plant in full sun.
Height Up to approx 90 cm.
Flowering June to September; cut back after flowering or allow seedheads to ripen for self?sowing.

Sowing instructions

Direct sow thinly into finely raked, warm, moist soil about 5 mm deep and thin seedlings to around 20–25 cm for sturdy growth and good airflow; autumn sowings establish for earlier flowers the following year.

Grow and maintenance

Grow in well drained soil in full sun; avoid over rich conditions which can reduce flowering. Water to establish then keep fairly dry to encourage abundant blooms. Deadhead to prolong display or leave some seedheads to set if self sowing is desired.

Uses and benefits

Excellent for dramatic drifts, mixed borders, and cottage or meadow plantings; the dark, velvety flowers add depth and contrast and make effective cut flowers when picked early in the day.
