Poppy Shirley Single Mix Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

The Papaver rhoeas, commonly known as the Shirley Poppy, is a graceful, hardy annual with a beautiful blend of single, delicate blooms in an array of soft pastel colours, as well as vibrant reds and pinks.

The Latin name Papaver rhoeas comes from "papaver," meaning "poppy" in Latin, and "rhoeas," meaning "red," referring to the plant’s native red flower colour. The Shirley Single Mix is a stunning variation of this traditional wildflower, known for its elegant, single-petalled flowers and long-lasting beauty.

It makes an excellent choice for creating a soft, naturalistic look in wildflower meadows, borders, or even as part of a cottage garden.

This plant grows to a height of 60-75 cm and thrives in full sun and well-drained, moderately fertile soil. The Shirley Poppy flowers from late spring to summer, attracting bees and butterflies while adding vibrant colour to any garden.

With its delicate blooms and airy foliage, it is the perfect choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance yet striking annual that brings charm and wildlife to their space.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds from March to May in seed trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost. Lightly press the seeds into the compost, but do not cover them, as they need light to germinate. Keep at 15-20°C for optimal germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot from April to June. Lightly press the seeds into the soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 60-75 cm apart once established.

The Shirley Single Mix is a perfect choice for gardeners looking for a charming, easy-to-grow flower that offers a delightful range of colours and attracts beneficial pollinators. Its natural beauty makes it an ideal addition to any garden, from wildflower meadows to cottage-style beds.
