Parsnip White Gem Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

A hardy winter parsnip producing high yields of wedge shaped white roots with smooth skins and a sweet flavour.

It can be left in the ground over winter and shows good canker resistance, making it a reliable choice for kitchen gardens and allotments.

Sow February to May, thinly where they are to crop in a deep, fertile bed.

Germination 10 to 28 days, often slow in cool conditions.

Soil and Position Prefers deep, fertile loam or sandy soil; tolerant of acidic, alkaline, or neutral soils. Best in full sun. Use ground manured for a previous crop rather than fresh manure.

Height Root crop; foliage typically 30 to 60 cm.

Harvest October to February; lift as required after foliage begins to die down. Flavour improves after frost.

Good Companions Radish, beans, garlic, pea, and peppers.

Sowing instructions

Depth and spacing: Sow thinly 1 to 1.5 cm deep in rows about 30 cm apart. Do not transplant. Thin seedlings to around 10 cm for full sized roots.

Timing: Sow February to May. Keep soil evenly moist to support slow, steady germination and avoid seedbed drying.

Grow and maintenance

Soil prep: Choose deep, stone free soil to prevent forking. Parsnips are not fussy about soil type but perform best on light soils. Avoid fresh manure in spring to maintain root quality.
