Description
Poppy Wildflower Mix Seeds - Irish Plants Direct
The Papaver rhoeas commonly known as the Corn Poppy, is a striking wildflower that features vibrant red blooms set against a backdrop of green fields and meadows.
The scarlet red of the Corn Poppy with other wildflower varieties, creates a beautifully diverse, naturalistic display. The Latin name Papaver rhoeas comes from "papaver," meaning "poppy," and "rhoeas," which is derived from the Greek word for "red," referencing the poppy's bright red flowers. Perfect for adding a splash of colour to wildflower meadows, verges, or naturalised garden areas.
The plant grows to a height of 60-90 cm and thrives in full sun and well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil. This hardy annual is known for its ability to self-seed, meaning it can return year after year, creating a natural, evolving beauty.
The vibrant blooms are a favourite for pollinators, including bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to support local wildlife.
Seed Qty: Approx. 1000
Sow: March - May (indoors) or April - June (outdoors)
Germination: 14 - 21 days
Soil: Well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil; slightly alkaline to neutral pH
Height: 60 - 90 cm
Flowering: Late spring - summer
Companion Plants: Cornflower, Black-eyed Susan, Sweet William
Avoid Planting With: Heavy-feeding plants like Brassicas
Water moderately to encourage healthy growth, but avoid over-watering, as these wildflowers are drought-tolerant once established.
Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds from March to May in seed trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost. Lightly press the seeds into the compost, as they require light for germination. Maintain a temperature of 15-20°C for optimal germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden after the last frost.
Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil in a sunny, sheltered spot from April to June. Lightly press seeds into the soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 60-90 cm apart once established.
The Poppy Wildflower Mix is a perfect choice for gardeners looking to create a natural, low-maintenance wildflower meadow that attracts pollinators and enhances the beauty of outdoor spaces with minimal effort.
