Dyer’s Weed Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

A historic dye plant producing tall stems with clusters of yellow green flowers.

Native Flowers Dyer’s Weed is valued for its role in natural dyeing, yielding a clear, bright yellow pigment.
Unlike ornamental wildflowers, Dyer’s Weed has been cultivated for centuries for textile dyeing, making it one of the most culturally significant native plants.

Its upright habit and summer flowering make it a distinctive addition to wildlife friendly gardens.

Seed Qty Approx 0.1 grams

Sow March–May or August–September directly outdoors or in trays. Germination 14–21 days at 18–22°C.
Soil and Position Well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil; prefers full sun.
Height 60–120 cm with slender stems and clusters of yellow-green flowers.
Flowering June–September.

Sowing instructions
Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost and press lightly. Do not cover, as light aids germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle, spacing 25–30 cm apart. Alternatively sow directly outdoors in prepared beds.

Grow and maintenance
Grow in sunny, well-drained soil with minimal care. Dyer’s Weed thrives in poorer soils and requires little feeding. Water during prolonged dry periods. Allow plants to self-seed for naturalised displays.

Uses and benefits
Perfect for ornamental use in wildlife gardens, dye gardens, and naturalistic planting schemes. Dyer’s Weed produces yellow-green flowers and is historically important for natural dyeing. Highly suitable for home gardens and allotments. Attractive to pollinators and excellent for sustainable craft practices.
