The name Cosmos is derived from the Greek word meaning "order" or "harmony," referring to the flower’s well-balanced, symmetrical petals, while bipinnatus refers to the finely divided, feathery leaves.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds outdoors from March to May in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Scatter the seeds thinly on the surface, lightly pressing them into the soil, then cover them with a thin layer. Water gently and keep the soil moist until germination. Once the seedlings appear, thin them to 25-30 cm apart to allow for healthy growth.

 

For an earlier start, sow seeds indoors from February to April in seed trays filled with fine compost. Press seeds lightly into the surface and maintain a temperature of 18-21°C. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and harden them off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

 

Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering throughout the summer.
