Germination 14 to 21 days in warm, steady conditions.
Soil and Position Loam or sandy soil that is alkaline or neutral in full sun to partial shade. Brassicas require alkaline soil, so lime if necessary.
Height Compact rosettes at maturity; suitable for beds and containers.
Harvest May to October for mature heads and extended baby leaf with protection. Harvest by cutting at the base.

Sowing instructions

Preparation: Sow thinly in a prepared seed bed between February and May and again September to October under cover for baby leaf. Sow June to August in open ground for mature heads.
Depth and spacing: Sow 1.5 cm deep. Keep rows about 40 cm apart for good airflow and access.
Successions: Repeat sowing through the window for steady supply. Baby leaves can be cut without thinning or allow plants to mature.

Grow and maintenance

Water and nutrition: Keep soil evenly moist to prevent bolting. Avoid waterlogging. Enrich beds beforehand and maintain alkaline conditions if needed.
Protection: Use cloches, fleece, or mesh for early and late sowings, and to deter flea beetle on young plants.
Harvesting: Cut whole heads at the base or pick leaves for cut and come again. Baby leaf can regrow for multiple cuts.

Uses and benefits

Culinary: Excellent in stir fries, salads, and Oriental dishes with a crisp texture and mild flavour. A good source of vitamin C and K.
Versatility: Suitable for beds, raised beds, and containers. Reliable across a long season due to slow bolting and disease tolerance.
