Onion Pickling De Barletta Seed

De Barletta is a classic Italian heirloom onion grown especially for pickling and fresh use.

 

The bulbs are small, round, and pure white, with a delicate flavour that makes them ideal for preserving in vinegar or enjoying raw in salads. Known for its early maturity, this variety produces harvestable bulbs in as little as 90 to 120 days from sowing.

 

The onions are firm and uniform, typically 2 to 3 cm in diameter, making them the perfect size for jars. De Barletta is also valued for its winter hardiness, allowing it to be sown early in the season and harvested before many other onions are ready.

Sow Early March to late April outdoors in rows

Germination 15 to 20 days at 12 to 18°C

Soil and Position Fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Avoid freshly manured ground

Spacing Rows 20 cm apart, thin seedlings to 3 to 4 cm apart for pickling size

Harvest June to August, around 90 to 120 days from sowing

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow thinly in finely prepared soil, 1 cm deep, in rows 20 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 3 to 4 cm spacing for small pickling bulbs, or wider if larger onions are desired. Keep soil moist during germination and early growth.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Weed regularly to reduce competition. Water in dry spells to ensure steady growth. Harvest when tops begin to yellow and fall over. For pickling, lift bulbs while still small and firm. Cure in a dry airy place for a few days before storing or preserving.
