Onion Red Baron Seeds

 

A reliable late cropping maincrop onion producing medium sized, firm, flattish globe bulbs with deep blood red skins and red edged white flesh.

 

Red Baron is valued for its excellent flavour, strong colour, and long storage life, making it a favourite for both kitchen gardens and allotments. Perfect for slicing fresh into salads, cooking in savoury dishes, or storing for winter use.

Sow February to April under cover or directly outdoors in drills.

Germination 14–21 days in warm, steady conditions.

Soil and Position Prefers loam or sandy soil that is alkaline or neutral; thrives in full sun with good drainage.

Height Bulbs form at soil level; foliage to approx. 30–40 cm.

Harvest August to February; when foliage yellows and falls, leave bulbs for 2 weeks before lifting. Cure by drying for up to 3 weeks before storing.

Good Companions Carrots, beetroot, lettuce, leeks, and brassicas.

Avoid Pairing With Beans, peas, and asparagus.

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow thinly in rows 1 cm deep, 30 cm apart, from February to April. Thin seedlings to 10 cm apart once established. For earlier crops, sow under cover in modules and transplant when large enough to handle. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in fertile, well drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while bulbs are swelling. Avoid fresh manure, which can cause soft growth. When foliage yellows and falls, lift bulbs carefully with a fork and dry thoroughly before storing.
