Chard Rhubarb Vulcan seeds – Beta vulgaris

A decorative, nutrient rich variety with vivid red stems and glossy green leaves, ideal for ornamental and culinary use.

Chard Rhubarb Vulcan is a striking and easy-to-grow variety that brings colour and flavour to the garden. Its bright crimson stems contrast beautifully with deep green foliage, creating a bold visual impact in beds, borders, and containers.

The leaves can be harvested young for salads or matured for steaming, stir-frying, or braising. With a flavour profile that hints at beetroot and rhubarb, this variety is both versatile and vitamin-rich, offering a reliable crop from midsummer into late autumn.

It performs well in a range of soils and is tolerant of cooler conditions, making it a favourite for Irish gardens.

Sow seeds directly outdoors between April and July into a prepared seed bed, 1.5 cm deep and spaced in rows 40 cm apart. Cover lightly and water well. Germination takes 14–21 days. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 15 cm apart to allow for full growth. Keep the crop well-watered to prevent bolting and harvest by cutting stems at the base.

Regular picking encourages fresh growth and prolongs the harvest season. Suitable for both ornamental and edible use, this variety adds structure and colour to any garden.
