Sowing Instructions

 

Sow direct into a well prepared seedbed March to May or August to September for a later flush of flowers. Scatter thinly and rake in lightly or sow in drills 1 to 2 cm deep. Keep soil surface moist until seedlings emerge. Thin to 10 to 20 cm apart or sow at final spacing to avoid transplant shock.

 

For earlier displays sow under cover and transplant out after the last frost. Grow in full sun for best flowering and avoid high fertility which reduces flowering and increases foliage.

 

Flax prefers a sunny free draining site and will tolerate poor soils that many other annuals dislike. Water moderately and avoid overfeeding. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering and cut stems for vases when flowers are newly open for best vase life. Allow some plants to self seed if naturalising is desired, and lift seed heads for drying to save seed.
