Primula Auricula Seeds

Auriculas are the alpine cousins of the primrose, long cherished by gardeners for their unique foliage and exquisite flowers.

 

Their rounded, fleshy leaves are often covered with a silvery powder (farina), which protects them from intense sunlight in their native alpine habitats.

 

The flowers, borne in clusters above the foliage, come in an extraordinary range of colours: yellow, cream, purple, crimson, green edged, striped, and even double forms.

 

Historically, Auriculas were prized by 18th and 19th century florists, and today they remain favourites for collectors and alpine gardeners.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds on the surface of moist compost and cover lightly with vermiculite. Keep at 15–18°C, or sow outdoors in autumn for natural winter stratification. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle. Grow on in cool, bright conditions and plant out the following spring.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Auriculas prefer cool, moist but well drained conditions and dislike hot, dry sites. They are excellent in pots, where they can be displayed at flowering time, then moved to a cooler, shaded spot for summer. Protect from slugs and vine weevils. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigour.
