Poached Egg Plant Seed - Irish Plants Direct

Cheerful, low-growing annual with yellow centers and white petals that genuinely look like poached eggs. Compact plants thrive in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil, bringing a sunny carpet of colour to borders, rock gardens, and wildflower patches.

Hardy annual and very attractive to bees and beneficial insects.

Seed qty: Approx 100

Sow: March to May, and late August to October for spring flowers; direct sow where they are to bloom.
Germination: 14–21 days in warm, moist soil.
Soil and position: Full sun to partial shade; moist but well-drained soil.
Height: 15 cm noted commonly; up to 20–30 cm in some descriptions.
Flowering: June to October depending on sowing time.

Sowing instructions

Depth and cover: Sow thinly onto finely raked, moist soil and rake in to about 3 mm; keep evenly moist until established.
Direct sowing: Best sown in situ in mid-spring; late-season sowings flower earlier the following year.

Grow and maintenance

Care: Water to maintain light moisture; avoid waterlogging. Plants often self-sow for repeat displays year after year.
Wildlife: Outstanding for beneficial insects; hoverflies are especially drawn to it, helping control aphids.

Uses and benefits

Display: Ideal as fragrant ground cover in borders, rock gardens, and meadow style plantings.
Highly attractive to bees and pollinators.
