Eryngium Planum Seed

Architectural silvery and highly attractive to pollinators. Eryngium planum produces flat headed steel blue flowerheads on stiff upright stems above spiny grey green leaves.

 

Plants form neat clumps that add structural contrast to borders gravel gardens and coastal schemes. Long lasting in flower and excellent for cutting and drying, they are particularly valued for nectar rich blooms that attract bees and butterflies.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow indoors March to May surface sow or cover very lightly in trays of moist seed compost and cold stratify for 2 to 4 weeks at 4°C to improve germination. After stratification move to 18 to 21°C and keep moist but not waterlogged. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and harden off before planting out after the last frost. For direct sowing choose April to May in a well prepared weed free seedbed and thin to 30 to 45 cm apart.

 

 

Grow in full sun for best colour and flowering and avoid heavy moisture retentive soils. Provide excellent drainage and a sunny sheltered position. Mulch lightly in spring and divide overcrowded clumps every 3 to 4 years to maintain vigour. Stake taller plants if needed and leave some seedheads for winter interest and wildlife.
