Zinnia Oklahoma Mix RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Zinnia elegans 'Oklahoma Mix' is a stunning annual variety prized for its vibrant, uniform blooms in a rich palette of colours, including red, orange, yellow, and white. Known for its strong, sturdy stems and compact, bushy growth habit, this mix creates a striking floral display, making it a popular choice for bedding, borders, and containers. Zinnia Oklahoma Mix is ideal for gardeners seeking a colourful, low-maintenance plant that attracts pollinators and provides a long-lasting summer show.

The name Zinnia honours the German botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn, who first described the genus in the 18th century. Oklahoma Mix refers to the specific cultivar within the Zinnia elegans species, known for its bushier growth and compact size, making it perfect for smaller garden spaces or containers. The bright, daisy-like flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, adding both beauty and biodiversity to the garden.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Zinnia elegans 'Oklahoma Mix' is a reliable performer in UK gardens, especially in areas that receive full sun. It thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil and offers a long flowering season from summer through to autumn. This variety is particularly noted for its resistance to disease and its ability to withstand heat, making it an excellent choice for a hot, sunny garden spot.

Growing to a height of 40 - 50 cm, Zinnia Oklahoma Mix is perfect for the front or middle of borders, flower beds, or patio containers. Its compact size allows for easy integration into various garden designs, while its long-lasting blooms make it a valuable addition to cut flower gardens.

Zinnia Oklahoma Mix is easy to grow and low-maintenance once established. It thrives in full sun and is drought-tolerant, making it perfect for dry, sunny spots in the garden. To ensure the plant stays healthy and blooming throughout the summer, remove dead flowers regularly (deadheading) to encourage new growth. This annual is also excellent for container planting, providing vibrant colour in both small and large pots.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Lightly press the seeds into the surface without covering them, as light aids germination. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil from April to May, once the risk of frost has passed. Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 25 - 30 cm apart for healthy growth.

With its bold, colourful blooms and easy-care nature, Zinnia Oklahoma Mix is a fantastic choice for both experienced and novice gardeners. Perfect for adding a splash of colour to flower beds, borders, and containers, it provides a long-lasting display throughout the summer months.
