Nasturtium Jewel Cherry Red Seeds Tropaeolum majus

A compact hardy annual with a profusion of semi double hot pink to cherry red flowers above attractive dark green foliage.

 

Jewel Cherry Red forms neat clumps that deliver a reliable summer display in beds, borders and containers; both flowers and leaves are edible and add colour and a peppery bite to salads and garnishes.

Sow Sow March to May; sow into individual pots for earlier displays or direct sow where they are to flower after all risk of frost has passed.

Germination 7 to 10 days in warm conditions; sow on the surface or cover very lightly and keep evenly moist for best results.

Soil and Position Thrives in loam chalk or sandy soils and is tolerant of acidic alkaline or neutral conditions; prefers a sunny position with good drainage and will tolerate light shade.

Height Approx 30 cm; compact bushy habit ideal for edging pots and low borders.

Flowering June to September with abundant summer blooms; regular deadheading prolongs flowering and keeps plants tidy.

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow 3 or 4 seeds into individual pots on a sunny windowsill in March to May or sow directly into prepared soil after frost risk has passed. Keep seed compost warm and moist, prick out or pot on when seedlings are large enough to handle and harden off before planting out. Space plants about 20 to 30 cm apart in beds or position singly in containers for best effect.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in free draining soil and water regularly while establishing; avoid waterlogging. Feed lightly in containers and deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous bloom. Use containers or defined beds to control spread and make rotation easier. Allow some seed set if you want volunteers for the following year.
