Black Mulberry Tree Seeds - Irish Plant Direct

A long lived and characterful fruit tree, that is prized for its richly flavoured dark berries and its broad, handsome foliage.

The Black Mulberry has been cultivated for centuries, valued both for its exceptional fruit quality and its ornamental presence.
Its spreading, gnarled branches and heart shaped leaves create a striking silhouette that becomes more impressive with age.

This hardy deciduous tree thrives in warm, sunny positions and well drained soil. Once established, it is remarkably resilient, tolerating drought, urban conditions, and a wide range of soil types.

In summer, it produces juicy, deep purple to black fruits with an intense, aromatic sweetness that makes them ideal for fresh eating, preserves, and baking.

Sowing Instructions
Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. Sow into pots of moist, free draining compost and cover lightly with fine soil. Maintain temperatures between 18 and 22°C and keep the compost slightly moist. Germination can be slow and irregular, often taking several weeks. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and grow on in bright, warm conditions. Move outdoors only after the last frost.

Grow and Maintenance
Provide full sun and well drained soil for best fruiting. Water regularly during establishment, then sparingly once mature. Feed lightly in spring to support growth and berry production. Prune in late summer to maintain shape and remove crossing branches. Morus nigra is long lived and becomes increasingly productive with age, often fruiting reliably even in cooler climates.
