Marigold African Crackerjack Mixed Seeds

A showy mix of large single and semi double African marigolds producing bold pompom like blooms in vibrant orange, gold and mahogany tones. Crackerjack forms sturdy upright clumps that deliver a long flamboyant summer display with excellent presence in beds, borders and large containers.

 

The robust habit and prolific flowering make this mix ideal for bright seasonal colour, massed bedding schemes and cut flowers.

Sow March - June 

Germination 7 to 14 days at 18 to 22°C; earlier sowing under cover gives earlier blooms

Soil Fertile well drained loam or multi purpose compost with good organic matter; tolerates a range of soils

Height 40 to 90 cm depending on spacing and variety within the mix

Flowering From early summer through autumn until first hard frost; deadhead to encourage continuous bloom

Good Companions Tomatoes; brassicas; basil; herbs and bedding plants to deter certain pests

Avoid Pairing With Very Shaded Plants that will be outcompeted for light

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow thinly in trays or modules March to April under cover and keep at 18 to 22°C; cover lightly with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Prick out when seedlings have true leaves and harden off before planting out after all risk of frost. For direct sowing choose April to June in prepared beds and thin to 25 to 40 cm apart depending on desired effect. Space plants more widely for larger fuller flowers and closer for a massed bedding display.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Plant in full sun to light shade and provide regular watering until established; avoid waterlogging. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser during peak growth to sustain heavy flowering. Remove spent blooms to prolong the display and reduce seed set if you want sustained flowering rather than volunteers. Support taller clumps in exposed sites if necessary. African marigolds are heat tolerant and low maintenance, making them excellent for beds, borders, large containers and cutting.
