A traditional Italian heirloom kale producing long dark green savoyed leaves with rich flavour.

 

Known botanically as Brassica oleracea var. palmifolia Nero Di Toscana this variety is valued for its culinary excellence and ornamental appeal.

 

Unlike ordinary cabbages Nero Di Toscana provides continuous harvests of tender leaves making it one of the most admired choices for kitchen gardens and allotments.

Sow March to June directly outdoors in prepared beds or in trays for transplanting. Germination 7 to 14 days at 15 to 20°C. Soil and Position Fertile well drained soil enriched with compost; prefers full sun. Height 60 to 90 cm with upright habit and long strap like leaves. Harvesting August to March depending on sowing time.

 

Sowing instructions

Prepare a fine seed bed in full sun. Sow seeds thinly in drills 1 cm deep and 30 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 45 cm spacing once established. Water well after sowing and keep soil evenly moist during dry spells. Transplant tray grown seedlings when large enough to handle.

 

Grow and maintenance

Grow in fertile soil with regular watering during dry periods. Nero Di Toscana thrives in sunny sites and withstands winter conditions. Harvest leaves regularly from the base upwards to encourage continued growth. Suitable for succession sowings to extend the harvest season.
