Warty Mix is a fast growing ornamental gourd selection that produces a diverse assortment of quirky fruits.

 

The gourds range from round to elongated, with surfaces covered in distinctive bumps and warts. Colours vary from deep green and orange to yellow, cream, and striped combinations, ensuring every harvest is unique.

 

The vigorous vines can reach 2–3 metres, scrambling over fences, trellises, or the ground. Plants are easy to grow and highly decorative, offering both garden interest and a harvest of unusual fruits that can be dried for long lasting use.

Sow April to May indoors, or May to June outdoors after frost

Germination 7 to 14 days at 18–22°C

Soil and Position Fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Requires space for trailing vines

Height/Spread Vines 200–300 cm, spreading habit

Harvest September to October. Pick before frost when skins are hard and fully coloured

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds 2 cm deep in pots of moist compost. Harden off and transplant once all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively, sow directly outdoors in warm soil. Space plants 90–120 cm apart to allow for vigorous growth.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water regularly during dry spells and mulch to conserve moisture. Feed with a balanced fertiliser once vines begin to run. Harvest fruits before frost, leaving a short stem attached. Cure in a warm dry place for 2–3 weeks before storing or using for decoration.
