Gourd Flat Striped Ornamental Seeds

Flat Striped is a distinctive ornamental gourd variety grown for its eye catching striped fruits.

 

The gourds are small and flattened, typically 8 to 12 cm across, with bold contrasting stripes in shades of green, yellow, cream, and orange. Their unique shape and vivid colouring make them a favourite for seasonal decoration and craft use.

 

The plants are vigorous annual vines, spreading 2 to 3 metres across the ground or climbing supports such as trellises and fences. They are easy to cultivate and highly productive, producing a generous crop of decorative fruits that can be harvested in late summer and autumn. Once cured, the gourds keep their ornamental qualities for months, making them ideal for long lasting displays.

Germination 7 to 14 days at 18 to 22°C

Soil and Position Fertile well drained soil in full sun. Requires space for trailing vines or support for climbing

Harvest September to October. Pick when skins are hard and fully coloured

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds 2 cm deep in pots of moist compost. Harden off and transplant once all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively sow directly outdoors in warm soil. Space plants 90 to 120 cm apart to allow for vigorous growth.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water regularly during dry spells and mulch to conserve moisture. Feed with a balanced fertiliser once vines begin to run. Harvest fruits before frost leaving a short stem attached. Cure in a warm dry place for 2 to 3 weeks before storing or using for decoration.
