Gourd Nest Egg Ornamental Seeds

Nest Egg is a fascinating ornamental gourd variety named for its uncanny resemblance to real eggs.

 

The plants produce small, smooth, pure white fruits about 5 to 7 cm long, with a hard skin that keeps well once dried. Their unusual appearance makes them a favourite for decorative use, craft projects, and seasonal displays.

 

The vigorous vines can spread 2 to 3 metres, scrambling across the ground or climbing supports such as trellises and fences. Each plant produces a generous crop of egg?shaped gourds that can be harvested in late summer and autumn. Once cured, the fruits become woody and long lasting, retaining their shape and colour for months.

Sow April to May indoors, or May to June outdoors after frost

Germination 7 to 14 days at 18 to 22°C

Soil and Position Fertile well drained soil in full sun. Requires space for trailing vines or support for climbing

Height/Spread Vines 200 to 300 cm trailing or climbing habit

Harvest September to October. Pick when skins are hard and fruits fully white

 

Sowing Instructions

 

Sow seeds 2 cm deep in pots of moist compost. Harden off and transplant once all risk of frost has passed. Alternatively sow directly outdoors in warm soil. Space plants 90 to 120 cm apart to allow for vigorous growth.

 

Grow and Maintenance

 

Water regularly during dry spells and mulch to conserve moisture. Feed with a balanced fertiliser once vines begin to run. Harvest fruits before frost leaving a short stem attached. Cure in a warm dry place for 2 to 3 weeks before storing or using for decoration.
