Ornamental Corn Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

 

A striking decorative form of Zea mays, ornamental corn produces tall stems with colourful foliage and richly hued cobs that bring bold structure and autumn interest to borders and cutting gardens.

 

The plants develop upright architectural growth with broad leaves that may show streaks of burgundy, bronze or green depending on the strain.

 

As the season progresses, the cobs mature into vibrant displays of kernels in shades of deep red, purple, gold, cream and blue. These jewel toned ears are ideal for autumn arrangements, harvest decorations and dried craft work.

 

The plants also provide height and movement in summer borders, pairing beautifully with sunflowers, grasses and prairie style perennials.

 

Ornamental corn thrives in full sun and fertile well drained soil and is easy to grow in warm sheltered positions.

Soil and Position Rich fertile free draining soil in full sun

Height and Spread 120 to 200 cm tall, 30 to 45 cm spread

Harvest August to October for decorative cobs.

 

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds in pots or modules of moist well drained compost 2 to 3 cm deep. Maintain a temperature of 18 to 24°C. Harden off and plant out after the last frost spacing 30 to 45 cm apart in blocks rather than rows to improve pollination. For direct sowing place seeds in warm soil once frost risk has passed. Water regularly during establishment.

 

Grow and Maintenance

Feed every two weeks with a balanced fertiliser during active growth. Keep soil evenly moist especially in dry spells. Allow cobs to mature fully on the plant before harvesting for decoration. Plants thrive in sunny sheltered borders and add height and late season interest.
