Description

A tall cottage garden cosmos with soft pink to deep magenta daisy like flowers held above fine feathery foliage through the summer season.

Cosmos Early Summer is a graceful annual that produces a generous display of daisy like blooms ranging from light pink to rich magenta creating a warm and lively summer border.

Plants grow tall with airy fern like foliage and long slender stems that sway gently in the breeze adding height movement and softness to beds and mixed plantings.

This variety flowers freely from early summer into autumn when regularly deadheaded and is highly attractive to bees butterflies and other pollinating insects.

Early Summer thrives in full sun and well drained soil and is particularly well suited to cottage gardens wildlife friendly borders and relaxed naturalistic planting schemes.

The long stems make it an excellent cut flower bringing colour and lightness to indoor arrangements.

Sowing and planting

Sow indoors from February to April or outdoors in May

Germination takes approximately fourteen to twenty one days at temperatures between fifteen and twenty degrees Celsius

Grow in loam chalk or sandy soil that is acidic alkaline or neutral in full sun

Height approximately one hundred centimetres

Spread approximately one hundred and twenty centimetres

Flowers from June to October

Sowing instructions

Sow on a warm windowsill or in a propagator into trays of moist compost and cover with six millimetres of sieved compost

Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle spacing them five centimetres apart to grow on

Alternatively sow outdoors in May into finely raked soil and cover lightly

Harden off gradually before planting out after all risk of frost has passed

Growing and maintenance

Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering

Water during prolonged dry spells but avoid overfeeding as rich soil encourages foliage over flowers

Support may be helpful in exposed sites due to tall stems
