Celery Golden Self Blanching 3 Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Apium graveolens var. dulce is a superb, easy-to-grow variety known for its naturally golden stems and mild, crisp flavour.

The Latin name Apium means "bee plant," reflecting its attraction to pollinators in bloom, while graveolens refers to its aromatic nature. This variety eliminates the need for earthing-up or wrapping, as its stems blanch naturally to a pale golden hue.

Perfect for fresh salads, soups, and stews, this celery offers both excellent taste and convenience.

Reaching a height of 30-45 cm, Golden Self Blanching thrives in fertile, moist soil and performs best in sunny or partially shaded locations. Its compact growth habit and high-quality yields make it ideal for both home gardens and allotments.

This self-blanching variety is perfect for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, flavourful celery that’s easy to cultivate and produces tender, succulent stems.

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds indoors from February to April in trays or modules filled with fine seed compost. Sow thinly and lightly cover with compost or vermiculite, maintaining a temperature of 18-20°C. Transplant seedlings to larger pots once they are large enough to handle, then harden off before planting outdoors.

Alternatively, sow seeds directly outdoors from May to June in prepared soil. Ensure rows are spaced 30 cm apart, with plants thinned to 20 cm spacing as they grow.

Keep soil consistently moist throughout the growing season to prevent stringy stems. Feed regularly with a balanced fertiliser, and mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest when stems are tender and fully blanched, cutting just above the soil line.

Celery Golden Self Blanching 3 combines excellent flavour, tender texture, and easy cultivation, making it a popular choice for gardeners of all levels.
