Borage ORGANIC Herb Seed – Irish Plants Direct

 

A beautiful and versatile organic herb with star shaped blue flowers and soft hairy leaves. Known botanically as Borago officinalis this hardy annual is valued for both its ornamental and culinary qualities. The edible flowers are a favourite garnish for salads desserts and summer drinks while the young leaves have a refreshing cucumber like flavour.

 

Borage is also renowned as one of the best plants for attracting bees and other pollinators.

Unlike many herbs borage thrives in poorer soils and will happily self sow to return year after year. Its long flowering season and ecological benefits make it a must have for wildlife friendly gardens.

 

Seed Qty Approx 1 gram

 

Sow March to May directly outdoors where they are to flower. Germination 7 to 14 days at 15–20°C. Soil and Position Light well drained soil; prefers full sun. Height Approx 60 to 80 cm; upright branching habit. Harvesting June to September; pick flowers and young leaves regularly.

 

Sowing instructions

 

Prepare a fine seed bed in a sunny position. Sow seeds thinly 1 cm deep in rows 30 cm apart. Thin seedlings to 25 cm spacing once established. Water well after sowing and keep soil moist until plants are growing strongly.

 

Grow and maintenance

 

Grow in full sun in light well drained soil. Water during dry spells but avoid overfeeding as this reduces flowering. Plants may self seed freely so remove unwanted seedlings if necessary. Flowers can be harvested fresh or dried and leaves are best picked young.

 

Uses and benefits

 

Perfect for wildlife gardens borders and herb beds. The edible blue flowers are excellent for garnishing salads desserts and drinks while the young leaves add a refreshing cucumber flavour to salads and summer dishes. Highly attractive to bees and pollinators borage is also a useful companion plant for strawberries tomatoes and courgettes. As an organic variety it supports sustainable and environmentally friendly gardening practices.
