Asparagus Early Of Argenteuil Seeds - Irish Plants Direct
 
This variety of asparagus was originally from Italy a versatile vegetable with violet purple spears with a sweet and creamy taste. 
 
A perennial vegetable that is well worth growing with a little patience as it will take between three and four years to produce a tasty crop. 
 
Seed Qty 0.3gram
 
Sow March - May
Germination 14 - 21 days
All soil types that are alkaline or neutral
Harvest April - June in the third year cut the stems when they are 150_200cm
Companion Plants carrots, parsley, basil, tomatoes. Do not plant with aliums or potatoes 
A good source of vitamin A, C and B6
Blanch the stems
 
Patience is needed for this vegetable as it cannot be harvested until its third year of growing. 
 
Sow thinly between March to May in a tray of moist compost cover the tray with polythene or propagator lid. 
 
When the plants are large enough to handle transplant into individual pots. 
 
Plant out in June or July after all risk of frost has passed. 
 
Dig a trench with a central ridge placing the crowns in the centre 45cm apart spreading the roots out cover with a layer of fine soil. 
 
Do not cut any foliage the first year
 
Cut one shoot per plant the second year. 
 
Cut all shoots the third year. 
 
Use a general purpose granular feed
