Asparagus Mary Washington forms strong upright plants that develop into long lived crowns producing generous harvests of flavourful spears each spring.
 
The fresh green shoots offer excellent taste and texture bringing a premium crop to kitchen gardens allotments and raised beds while the ferny summer foliage adds light airy structure to the garden.
 
This hardy perennial thrives in full sun and well drained soil showing excellent resilience and returning year after year with increasing yields.

Sow: February to May indoors or direct outdoors from April
Germination: 14 to 30 days at mild temperatures
Soil and Position: Free draining fertile soil in full sun
Height Spread: Ferns reach 120 to 150 cm tall 45 to 60 cm spread
Harvest: From the second or third year in spring
 
Sowing Instructions
Sow seeds thinly in trays of moist well drained compost Lightly cover with fine soil and maintain mild steady temperatures until germination Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle spacing 45 to 60 cm apart Harden off indoor seedlings and plant out after the last frost
Alternatively sow directly into prepared soil in late spring
 
Grow and Maintenance
Keep young plants well watered during establishment then moderately once crowns are growing strongly Allow plants to grow freely in the first year to build strong crowns Cut back the dried ferny foliage in late autumn and mulch lightly to protect crowns Harvest lightly in the second year and fully from the third year onwards
