Asparagus Albenga Purple F1 Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

This old fashioned traditional Italian variety produces intense deep purple spears that fade towards the roots it has a soft texture with an excellent buttery flavour.

A perennial vegetable that is well worth growing it's ready for harvesting in the fourth year when the plants will be big enough then produce year after year.

Sow March - May

Germination 21 - 35 days

All soil types that are alkaline or neutral

Harvest April - June in the fourth year

Companion Plants carrots, parsley, basil, tomatoes. Do not plant with aliums or potatoes

A good source of vitamin A, C and B6

Sow thinly between March - May in a tray of moist compost cover the tray with polythene or propagator lid.

When the plants are large enough to handle transplant into individual pots to grow on.

Leave in the pots until the following spring then plant out into their final growing position.

Second year

Dig a trench with a central ridge placing the crowns in the centre 30cm apart spreading the roots out cover with a layer of fine soil.

Third year

Do not cut any foliage

Fourth year begin to harvest the spears by cutting the shoots at the base.

Use a general purpose granular feed
