Ammi Majus RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Ammi majus, commonly known as Bishop's Flower, is a graceful annual with delicate, lacy white blooms arranged in intricate umbels. Resembling a refined version of cow parsley, it brings a natural, airy charm to garden borders and wildflower displays.

The name Ammi is derived from the Greek word for "sand," reflecting its preference for well-drained soils, while majus means "greater," indicating its strikingly large and elegant flowers.

Growing to a height of 90 - 120 cm, Ammi majus thrives in full sun and moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Its nectar-rich flowers attract a variety of beneficial pollinators, including bees and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardening.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for its outstanding garden performance and reliability, this variety is also featured in the Royal Horticultural Society seed scheme, ensuring premium quality for successful cultivation.

Sow: March - May (indoors) or April - May (outdoors)
Germination: 14 - 21 days
Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil; neutral to slightly alkaline pH
Height: 90 - 120 cm
Flowering: June - September

Ammi majus is easy to grow and low-maintenance once established. Water regularly during dry periods, but avoid overwatering. Deadheading spent blooms encourages a prolonged flowering season, while allowing some flowers to set seed ensures self-seeding for future displays.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from March to April. Lightly cover with a fine layer of compost and keep at a temperature of 15-18°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to May. Scatter seeds thinly and press gently for good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the area moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for optimal growth.

With its ethereal beauty and RHS AGM distinction, Ammi majus is perfect for cottage gardens, wildflower meadows, or as a filler in mixed borders. Its delicate, lace-like flowers also make stunning additions to fresh or dried floral arrangements.
