Wild Garlic Seed. - Irish Plants Direct

Wild Garlic, also known as Ramsons, is a perennial woodland herb prized for its aromatic leaves and mild garlic flavour. This shade-loving plant produces broad, lush green leaves in early spring, followed by clusters of delicate white star-shaped flowers. Its leaves are a forager’s delight, ideal for pestos, soups, salads, and sauces, while the flowers add a decorative and edible touch to dishes.

Perfect for naturalising in woodlands, shady borders, or under trees, Wild Garlic spreads gradually, creating a beautiful, fragrant carpet of greenery. It is highly attractive to pollinators, supporting bees and butterflies in early spring.

Sowing Instructions

Wild Garlic seeds require a period of cold stratification to germinate successfully. Sow seeds outdoors in autumn or early winter in well-prepared, moist soil in a shaded or semi-shaded location. Lightly press seeds into the soil and cover with a fine layer of compost or leaf mould. Keep the area consistently moist.

For indoor sowing, mix seeds with moist sand and place in the fridge for 6-8 weeks before sowing in seed trays. After stratification, sow seeds in deep trays with well-draining compost, keeping them cool and moist. Germination can be slow and irregular, so patience is key.

Once seedlings have established, transplant them into their final position in moist, shady areas. Over time, they will naturalise, forming a dense, edible ground cover. Harvest leaves sparingly in the first year to allow plants to establish.

Wild Garlic is a must-have for any forager or woodland gardener, offering a delicious and sustainable harvest of garlicky greens each spring.
