Verbena bonariensis Seeds – Irish Plants Direct

Verbena bonariensis is a tall, airy perennial producing slender stems topped with clusters of violet-purple flowers.

Its graceful habit adds height and movement to borders, while the long flowering season ensures colour from midsummer into autumn.

The blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a cornerstone of wildlife-friendly planting schemes. Often used in prairie style gardens, Verbena bonariensis creates a striking vertical accent among grasses and perennials.

Perfect for sunny beds, borders, and naturalistic planting schemes. The plants are branching and free flowering, with a light, open structure that blends beautifully with other summer flowers.

Excellent for adding vertical interest and for cut flower arrangements.

Seed Qty Approx 0.4 grams

Sow February to April on a warm windowsill or in a propagator.
Germination 14 to 28 days in warm, steady conditions.
Soil and Position Fertile, well-drained soil; chalk, loam, or sandy soils. Plant in full sun.
Height Approx 120 to 180 cm; tall, upright habit.
Flowering July to October; deadhead to prolong flowering.

Sowing instructions
Sow thinly onto moist, sieved compost and press the seed down gently. Do not cover, as light aids germination. Keep warm and evenly moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into trays spacing plants 5 cm apart to grow on. Harden off and plant out after the last frost. Verbena may also self-seed in the garden, providing natural continuity year after year.

Grow and maintenance
Plant in full sun in free draining soil. Water regularly while establishing, then moderately. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering. Tall stems may require support in exposed positions. Cut back in late autumn or early spring to encourage fresh growth. Hardy in mild regions, though protection may be needed in colder areas.

Uses and benefits
Perfect for beds, borders, prairie-style planting, and pollinator-friendly schemes. The tall, airy habit adds height and elegance to summer displays. Excellent for wildlife gardens and for mixing with ornamental grasses. Long-lasting blooms provide colour and nectar over an extended season.
