Thyme Creeping Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Thymus serpyllum, commonly known as Creeping Thyme, is a low-growing, aromatic herb that serves as both a culinary delight and an ornamental groundcover. With its small, aromatic leaves and tiny pink or purple flowers, Creeping Thyme is an ideal choice for edging, herb gardens, or filling in gaps in between stepping stones or garden paths.

The name Thymus comes from the Greek word "thymos," meaning "courage" or "spirit," as it was historically thought to promote bravery. Serpyllum refers to its creeping, spreading growth habit.

This hardy herb is highly prized for its strong, lemony flavour and is perfect for seasoning a variety of dishes, including meats, sauces, and soups.

Creeping Thyme is particularly well-suited to full sun and well-drained, slightly alkaline soil. It thrives in poor, dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens or as part of a xeriscaping project. The plant grows to a height of 10 - 15 cm and spreads rapidly, forming a dense mat of fragrant leaves that can be harvested throughout the growing season.

This herb is perfect for use in herb gardens, along borders, or as a fragrant, living mulch. Harvest the leaves as needed to add flavour to your meals or use them fresh or dried in herbal teas. The plant’s attractive flowers are also beneficial to pollinators, such as bees and butterflies, making it a great addition to wildlife-friendly spaces.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from March to April. Lightly cover the seeds with compost and keep at 18-21°C. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, weed-free soil from April to May. Lightly cover the seeds with soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing for healthy growth.

Creeping Thyme is an excellent choice for those seeking a versatile, fragrant groundcover that is as useful as it is beautiful. Whether for culinary use, ground cover, or adding fragrance to a garden, this herb is a fantastic addition to any outdoor space.
