Sweet Pea King Edward VII RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Lathyrus odoratus 'King Edward VII', commonly known as Sweet Pea King Edward VII, is a classic and highly fragrant variety that brings bold, royal colour to any garden. This striking variety features deep red blooms with a soft blush of pink, creating an elegant and regal display throughout the summer months. King Edward VII is perfect for growing on trellises, fences, or in containers, and it’s ideal for adding height, colour, and fragrance to mixed borders or cutting gardens. Its sweet scent and vibrant flowers also make it a favourite in floral arrangements.

The genus Lathyrus derives from the Greek word lathuros, meaning "pea," highlighting its relationship to the pea family. King Edward VII is named in honour of the British monarch, known for its rich and royal appearance. This variety is particularly loved for its large, robust blooms and exceptional fragrance, making it a popular choice among sweet pea enthusiasts.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Sweet Pea King Edward VII is recognised for its reliable performance and outstanding colour in UK gardens. It’s an excellent choice for both novice and experienced gardeners, offering not only beauty but also a wonderful fragrance that fills the garden during its long flowering period.

Growing to a height of 1.8 - 2.4 m, King Edward VII is a tall, vigorous climbing variety that thrives in full sun. It can be grown on a variety of supports such as trellises, obelisks, or in containers, and it will provide a stunning, fragrant focal point throughout the growing season.

Sweet Pea King Edward VII is a low-maintenance variety that requires a sunny position and well-drained soil to thrive. It benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods, but be sure to avoid waterlogging. Providing a strong support structure will help the plant climb and thrive, allowing its flowers to reach their full potential. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage new flowers and prolong the flowering season.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from October to April. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing to help improve germination. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C and ensure the soil remains moist. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil from March to May, once the risk of frost has passed. Plant seeds 2.5 cm deep and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 20 cm apart to allow for good air circulation and healthy growth.

With its elegant red blooms and delightful fragrance, Sweet Pea King Edward VII is a perfect addition to any garden. Whether used for adding height to borders, as a climbing feature, or for cut flowers, this variety will fill your garden with beauty and a lovely scent throughout the summer.
