Sunflower Valentine RHS Seeds
Helianthus annuus 'Valentine', commonly known as Valentine Sunflower, is a striking and unique variety that brings a touch of romance and elegance to the garden with its rich, red and gold bi-coloured blooms. This medium-sized sunflower features vibrant petals in shades of deep crimson and golden yellow, creating a stunning contrast that makes it an eye-catching addition to any garden. Sunflower Valentine is perfect for mixed borders, flower beds, containers, or cutting gardens, offering both beauty and versatility in the landscape.

The genus Helianthus is derived from the Greek words "helios" (sun) and "anthos" (flower), symbolising the sunflower's connection to the sun. Valentine is a special cultivar known for its beautiful, bold flowers and compact growth, making it ideal for smaller gardens or for those looking for sunflowers with a more refined appearance.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Sunflower Valentine is recognised for its high performance and reliability in UK gardens. This variety is appreciated not only for its beauty but also for its strong stems and disease resistance, making it a fantastic option for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

Growing to a height of 90 - 120 cm, Valentine Sunflower is a smaller variety compared to traditional sunflowers, making it perfect for garden beds, containers, or as part of a cutting garden. Its strong stems and vibrant blooms also make it a great option for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Sunflower Valentine is a low-maintenance variety that thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil. It’s drought-tolerant once established, but regular watering is important during dry spells to maintain its health and vibrancy. Deadheading the spent flowers encourages new blooms and prolongs the flowering season.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from March to May. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Maintain a temperature of 18-21°C and ensure the soil remains moist. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil from April to May, once the risk of frost has passed. Plant seeds 2.5 cm deep and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 30 cm apart to allow for strong, healthy growth and good air circulation.

With its charming bi-coloured blooms and compact size, Sunflower Valentine is an excellent addition to any garden. Perfect for creating a dramatic floral display in borders, containers, or cutting gardens, it provides not only vibrant colour but also attracts beneficial pollinators throughout the summer months.
