Squash Tromboncino D'Albenga Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

An unusual and highly decorative Italian heirloom squash producing long, pale green fruits that curve gracefully like a trombone.

When harvested young, the fruits can be cooked and enjoyed like courgettes, with a tender texture and mild flavour.
Left to mature, they develop into firm, nutty squashes with golden flesh, excellent for roasting, soups, and winter storage.

This vigorous climbing or trailing variety is ideal for training over arches, trellises, or fences, creating a striking feature in the garden.

Fruits can reach up to 1 m in length, with a bulbous end containing the seeds and a long neck of solid flesh.

Seed Qty Approx 3 grams

Sow April to May indoors in pots or modules, or direct outdoors after the last frost
Germination 7 to 14 days in warm steady conditions
Soil and Position Fertile, free draining soil in full sun. Benefits from a sheltered position and support for climbing vines
Height and Spread Vines can extend 3 to 4 m; fruits up to 1 m long
Harvest July to October. Pick young for courgette?like use or allow to mature for winter storage

Sowing Instructions

Sow seeds individually in pots 2 cm deep in moist compost. Keep at 18–21°C until germination. Harden off and transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants 1.5 to 2 m apart. Alternatively, sow directly outdoors in late May once the soil has warmed. Provide sturdy supports if growing vertically.

Grow and Maintenance

Water regularly during dry spells and mulch around plants to conserve moisture. Train vines over arches or trellises to save space and encourage straighter fruits. Harvest regularly when young to promote further cropping. Mature fruits should be left on the plant until the skin hardens, then cured in the sun before storing in a cool dry place.

Uses and Benefits

A dual purpose variety offering both tender courgette like fruits and long keeping winter squash. Excellent for grilling, roasting, soups, and stews. Its climbing habit makes it a space saving and ornamental addition to the garden. A traditional Italian favourite that combines productivity, versatility, and visual appeal.
