Sage Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

The Salvia officinalis commonly known as Sage is a fragrant, evergreen herb from the mint family, celebrated for its aromatic leaves and medicinal properties.

The Latin name Salvia officinalis comes from "salvia," meaning "to save" in Latin, referencing its traditional use in herbal medicine to promote health and wellbeing.

Sage is prized not only for its culinary uses in both fresh and dried form but also for its ornamental appeal in herb gardens and borders, where it adds a touch of silvery green foliage and a rich, earthy fragrance.

This hardy perennial grows to a height of 30-60 cm and thrives in well-drained, moderately fertile soil with full sun exposure. Sage is a low-maintenance herb that requires little attention once established, making it an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

It’s perfect for planting in herb gardens, containers, or as a border plant, and its leaves are frequently used in Mediterranean dishes, stuffing, and as a seasoning for meats, poultry, and vegetables.

Water moderately, ensuring the soil is kept slightly moist but not waterlogged. Sage prefers drier conditions and does not like overly wet soil, which can cause root rot.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Sow seeds from February to April in seed trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost. Lightly press the seeds into the soil and cover with a thin layer of compost. Keep at a temperature of 18-20°C for optimal germination. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared soil in a sunny, sheltered spot from April to May. Lightly press the seeds into the soil and keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 30-60 cm apart once they are established.

Sage is a must-have for any herb garden. With its bold flavour, versatility in cooking, and ability to thrive with minimal care, it's an essential addition for gardeners who appreciate both culinary herbs and aromatic plants.
