Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

The Phaseolus coccineus commonly known as the Runner Bean is a vigorous climbing plant known for its striking, vibrant flowers and high-yielding pods.

The Latin name Phaseolus coccineus refers to the plant's striking red (scarlet) flowers, with Phaseolus meaning “bean” and coccineus meaning “scarlet.”

The Scarlet Emperor variety is a classic, producing stunning scarlet-red flowers that are not only beautiful but also attract pollinators like bees and butterflies. This variety is renowned for its long, tender beans, perfect for cooking or freezing.

This vigorous climber can grow to a height of 2.5 - 3 meters, making it ideal for growing up trellises, fences, or other supports in the garden. It thrives in rich, well-drained soil with full sun and is known for its heavy crop production, yielding long, flat beans in late summer to early autumn.

Scarlet Emperor beans are especially prized for their excellent flavour and texture, whether steamed, boiled, or added to stews and casseroles.

Sowing Instructions

Indoors: Start seeds in pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from April to May. Sow two seeds per pot, approximately 2.5 cm deep, and keep at a temperature of 18-21°C. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into the garden after the last frost, spacing them 25-30 cm apart.

Outdoors: Direct sow seeds in prepared soil from late April to June, after the last frost. Sow 2-3 seeds per hole, about 2.5 cm deep, and space them 25-30 cm apart. Provide support with poles or a trellis to encourage vertical growth.

Runner Bean Scarlet Emperor is a perfect choice for gardeners seeking an easy-to-grow, highly productive climbing bean with stunning flowers and excellent eating quality. Its rapid growth and reliable yields make it a must-have for any vegetable garden.
