Rudbeckia Goldsturm RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii 'Goldsturm', commonly known as Goldsturm Black-eyed Susan, is a popular and iconic perennial renowned for its golden-yellow, daisy-like flowers with dark, conical centres. The cheerful blooms stand out beautifully against the plant's lance-shaped, dark green leaves, making it a perfect addition to borders, cottage gardens, and wildflower meadows. Goldsturm is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add a splash of vibrant colour while attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

The name Rudbeckia honours Swedish botanists Olof and Johannes Rudbeck, and fulgida refers to the plant’s bright, radiant flowers. Goldsturm translates to "golden storm," which captures the intensity and abundance of its golden blooms. This variety is especially prized for its long flowering period and resilience, making it a favourite among gardeners and landscapers.

Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Rudbeckia Goldsturm is recognised for its exceptional performance in UK gardens. It is particularly known for its ability to thrive in a range of conditions, including drought-tolerant once established, and for its vibrant, long-lasting display from late summer into autumn. The plant is ideal for creating bold splashes of colour, even in tough garden conditions, making it perfect for both experienced and beginner gardeners alike.

Growing to a height of 60 - 90 cm, Rudbeckia Goldsturm is a medium-sized perennial that works wonderfully in mixed borders, prairie-style plantings, and naturalistic gardens. Its upright growth habit also makes it a great choice for cutting gardens, as its sturdy stems hold up well when cut for floral arrangements.

Rudbeckia Goldsturm is a hardy and low-maintenance perennial that thrives in full sun or partial shade. It grows well in well-drained soil and is highly resistant to pests and diseases. Once established, it is drought-tolerant, making it perfect for dry or poor soil conditions. Regular deadheading will help prolong the flowering period and keep the plant looking tidy throughout the season.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Lightly press the seeds into the surface without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil from April to May, once the danger of frost has passed. Scatter seeds thinly on the soil surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 30 cm apart for healthy growth.

With its golden blooms, long flowering season, and easy-care nature, Rudbeckia Goldsturm is a fantastic addition to any garden. Whether used in borders, as part of a pollinator-friendly planting, or as a striking cut flower, this variety will provide months of colour and joy.
