Rosemary Herb Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is an aromatic evergreen herb known for its strong, fragrant scent and its needle like leaves that have a distinctive piney, slightly bitter flavour.

This versatile herb is a favourite in kitchens worldwide, especially for its use in Mediterranean cuisine, adding depth and aroma to a variety of dishes such as roasted meats, vegetables, and soups. Beyond its culinary uses, rosemary is also prized for its ornamental qualities, making it an excellent addition to herb gardens, borders, and containers.

Rosemary thrives in well drained, sandy or gravelly soil, preferring a sunny spot with good air circulation. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and hardy, making it ideal for low maintenance gardens.

The plant can grow into a small shrub, reaching a height of around 90 – 120 cm, and produces delicate, pale blue flowers in late spring to early summer, which are both attractive to pollinators and add an additional visual element to your garden. Its aromatic foliage also makes it a lovely addition to sensory gardens.

This herb is particularly beneficial in companion planting, as it is known to help deter pests such as mosquitoes and aphids, while attracting beneficial insects like bees. Rosemary’s oils are believed to have a variety of medicinal benefits, including aiding digestion and improving memory, adding to its allure as both a culinary and therapeutic herb.

Sowing Instructions

Start seeds indoors from February to March. Fill seed trays or pots with fine, well-draining compost, sowing seeds thinly on the surface and lightly covering with a thin layer of compost. Keep the temperature between 18-21°C and ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. Once seedlings are large enough, transplant them into individual pots and harden off before planting outdoors.

Direct sow outdoors in a sunny, well-drained location from late April to May. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface and lightly press them into the soil. Water gently and thin seedlings as necessary to provide good air circulation and healthy growth.

Rosemary is an essential herb for both culinary and ornamental gardens, offering year-round fragrance, culinary value, and an evergreen presence. Its hardiness, pollinator-attracting flowers, and numerous benefits make it a perfect addition to any herb or sensory garden.
