Rhodochiton Purple Bell Vine RHS Seeds - Irish Plants Direct

Rhodochiton atrosanguineus, commonly known as Purple Bell Vine, is a striking, fast-growing climber renowned for its unique, tubular purple flowers that resemble bells. These pendulous blooms, coupled with its dark, almost black foliage, create a dramatic and eye-catching display, making it an ideal choice for trellises, fences, and hanging baskets. Purple Bell Vine is perfect for gardeners looking to add a touch of exotic beauty and vertical interest to their outdoor space.

The name Rhodochiton comes from the Greek words rhodon (rose) and chiton (coat), referring to the rose-like hue of the plant’s flowers. Atrosanguineus means "dark blood-red," referring to the deep, rich purple colouring of the flowers. This variety is particularly admired for its ability to bloom profusely from summer through to autumn, attracting pollinators like bees and hummingbirds with its vibrant blooms.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Rhodochiton atrosanguineus is well-suited for UK gardens, where it can grow as an annual in cooler climates or as a hardy perennial in warmer regions. Its distinctive appearance and long-lasting flowers make it a favourite for adding drama and charm to vertical structures in the garden.

This vigorous vine can grow up to 3 - 4 metres, making it perfect for creating a stunning vertical feature on fences, pergolas, or arbors. It can also be grown in containers for a more manageable size while still delivering an impressive floral display.

Rhodochiton Purple Bell Vine is relatively easy to grow and maintain. It thrives in full sun or partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soil. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering during dry periods will help ensure vigorous growth and abundant blooms. It will benefit from regular pruning to keep its growth in check and to encourage more flowers.

Sowing Instructions
Indoors: Sow seeds in trays or pots filled with moist, well-drained compost from February to April. Press the seeds lightly into the surface, as light aids germination. Maintain a temperature of 18-20°C and keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, and harden off before planting outdoors after the last frost.

Outdoors: Sow directly into prepared, well-drained soil from April to May, once the danger of frost has passed. Scatter seeds thinly on the surface and gently press them down. Keep moist until germination occurs. Thin seedlings to 30 - 40 cm apart for healthy growth.

With its dramatic purple blooms and fast-growing nature, Rhodochiton Purple Bell Vine is a stunning addition to any garden. Its eye-catching flowers and ability to quickly cover trellises and fences make it an excellent choice for creating a vertical focal point, while its ease of care ensures it remains a favourite for years to come.
